A bicycle doesn’t just carry a rider — it carries a community forward. Or so goes the sentiment in Davis, CA, the Bicycle Capital of the Nation.
A new video in the Destination Davis series sheds light on the bicycling heritage of Davis through the eyes of those who know it best: the experts at the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame. In the video, Bob Bowen, president of the board of directors, explains that Davis was chosen as home for the Hall of Fame because of its strong support of the bicycle lifestyle. It was the first city in the nation to build designated streetside bike lanes, thus spurring other cities to follow suit.
In the video, lead docent and collections manager David Takemoto-Weerts says that the artifacts at the museum depict the evolution of the bicycle, from the early high wheel velocipedes of the early days to the lightweight, aerodynamic racing bikes of today.
Bowen describes the feeling of riding a bike as one of freedom, knowing you’re moving through the world on your own power. He compares it to being the captain of your own ship.
Not only does the museum offer a glimpse into the history of bicycles and bicycle racing, but it also depicts the impacts cycling has had on culture and community. For example, exhibits describe the accomplishments of Major Taylor, the first African American to win a cycling medal and how women have used cycling to democratize society.
The Hall of Fame not only educates the public about the history of cycling, but it also educates schoolchildren about how bike riding can improve health and build community. Bowen said he’s proud to educate future generations about the importance of cycling to support healthy communities and society as a whole.
“In my opinion, the museum represents not only the history of cycling but the possibilities of cycling,” he added.
