People indoor rock climbing at Rocknasium in Davis

At its heart, Davis is more than a city. It’s a community. The same can be said of Rocknasium climbing gym — it’s not just a business, it’s a community.

In a new episode of Destination Davis – a video series highlighting what makes Davis so unique –  Rocknasium owner Mark Leffler explains how he created a gathering spot for locals and visitors alike. UC Davis students, families, kids, anyone who is interested in indoor climbing or fitness will feel welcome here.

“Davis is a great community,” he added. “The gym is a really big gathering spot. Everybody has a great time together.”

Naturally, those who enjoy the challenge of rock climbing would enjoy a visit to Rocknasium. But it’s also ideal for those looking to connect with others and try something new. There are classes for both adults and kids, summer camps, clinics, climbing competitions, and social events like parties and potlucks.

Leffler added that it has a true family feel, one that welcomes everyone, regardless of age or ability. He even encourages those who have a fear of heights to give it a try — in his experience, once they get up the wall once or twice, they usually enjoy it.

“I want their experience at Rocknasium — how they remember it – to be our friendly atmosphere,” Leffler says. “That they’re not intimidated.”

The Davis community seems to agree. Since its opening in 1992, Rocknasium has expanded from 2,400 square feet to 6,000 square feet. In addition to climbing classes, they also offer yoga, dance, and weightlifting.

Leffler said that climbing has numerous benefits. Naturally, it is physically challenging. But it’s also a mental challenge. It helps build confidence through problem-solving and overcoming hurdles. And it builds trust within a friendly, supportive environment.

In the video, Leffler shares that many of his customers have said they love the environment at Rocknasium. Discovering a new sport that’s challenging and different is great, but so is discovering a community of like-minded people.

“I’d say the way Rocknasium reflects Davis is that community vibe,” Leffler added.
